• Halfback, fullback, wide receiver and linebacker
  • All-Gold Coast Conference first team – All Catholic All-State
  • Honored as the school’s top scholar athlete

Tom started every game for three straight years playing all over the field.  He was a halfback, fullback, wide receiver and linebacker …. In 1958 that quarterback was Jim Ellison and in ‘59 and ‘60 it was Jack Ellison.  Needless to say, Tom was their favorite receiver although that label came with a high level of expectations from his big brothers …. Of course, they expected him to catch every ball they threw his way.

Although Tom claims that his brothers were the real stars of those early Columbus teams, ….. it is clear that Tom was a standout as well. After his junior season, Tom was selected to the  All-Gold Coast Conference first team and was honorable mention All Catholic All-State.

He was a Columbus co-captains his senior year … and received numerous honors and awards including being named to the Miami Herald’s All-City team. He was also named Catholic School All American. He also participated in basketball and track at Columbus.  ….., he was honorable mention all-city for his performance in the high jump.

In 1961 – Tom was honored as the school’s top scholar athlete  … in fact …. He was the school’s first scholar athlete award winner. He went on to play football at the United States Naval Academy … one of his teammates there was  a guy named Roger Staubach …… a Heisman Trophy at Navy …. He graduated from the Naval Academy in 1966 and from Naval Pilot Training in 1967 …. He served aboard the aircraft carrier WASP from 1968 to 1971.
