Mike Flynn (’70) – Football
Mike Flynn is one of the first in the long line of great linebackers at Columbus which includes the names Mike Whittington, Jeff Sawyer, Marc and Nick Buonticonti, and Fred Sobek.
A 1970 graduate of Columbus High, Mike is one of the most honored players in the football program’s history. He was a three-year starter who always played the game with an aggressive abandon. Whether it was at linebacker or as a part-time running back or on special teams, Mike was that player who was looking for the big hit, the violent collision. In his senior year, Mike was selected First Team All-City, First Team All State and First Team All Catholic.
Also a two-year starter in basketball, Mike was selected Columbus Athlete of the Year in 1970. He was also named the All Catholic Athlete of the Year in the same year.
Mike received a football scholarship to Auburn University, where he played for the legendary Shugg Jordan. His Auburn teammates included Heisman Trophy winner Pat Sullivan. Following his senior season, Mike received Auburn’s unsung hero award.
Today, Mike lives in Boynton Beach, where he works in various business ventures.
