Mario Cristobal was one of the most feared and effective offensive linemen in this school’s history.  His line coach – Fred Foyo – said that Mario was “the most intense player” he has ever been around.  His head coach Dennis Lavelle told me no player at Columbus worked harder and with more intensity than Mario.

The team captain …. He was named first team All-Dade in his senior year …. He also participated in track and field at Columbus  …..

He was named the school’s Athlete of the Year in 1988.

Mario accepted a scholarship to the University of Miami … where he became a four-year letterman …. In his senior year, 1992, Mario was named first team all Big East as an offensive tackle ….

He signed with the Denver Broncos and played two seasons in NFL Europe before entering the coaching  profession.

Mario started his coaching career as a graduate assistant at Miami – where he also earned his master’s degree. ….  He went on to coach three years at Rutgers before returning to the University of Miami in 2004.  ….

And of course, in December 2006, Mario was named the head coach at Florida International University …..

If you follow college football … you know what Mario is accomplishing at FIU ….
