Jorge Fabregas (’88) – Baseball
Jorge Fabregas has the honor of being selected in the first round of the Major League baseball draft. Jorge played on the varsity baseball team for three seasons and was selected first team all-county in both his junior and senior seasons.
He received a scholarship to the University of Miami where he was a three-year starter. During those three years, the Canes played in the college World Series in 1989 and Jorge was selected to play for the United States baseball team in 1990.
Following the 1991 season, the California Angels selected Jorge in the first round of the Major League draft making him the first Columbus baseball player selected in the first round.
After three seasons in the minor leagues, Jorge, a catcher, was promoted to the Major Leagues where he spent the next 9 seasons. Jorge played in 646 Major League games before retiring after the 2002 season.
Today, he is a private baseball instructor working with young catchers and hitters.
Jorge and his wife, Marlene, have been married for 13 years. They live in Miami with their 3 children.
