• The Miami Herald’s Coach of the Year
  • He’s a hall of famer
  • Columbus (’82) – pitcher for the Explorers

In 2003 …. Under Joe’s direction …. The Explorers were state champions ….. It was the school’s first state championship in a major sport. In 16 seasons, he has won 391 games and lost 90 …. That’s an .812 winning percentage …. In a sport where 20 wins is considered a very good season, Joe’s teams have averaged 24 wins per season.

His teams have been state runner up twice ….. They have won 11 district championships, 5 regionals and  6 GMAC championships. He was been voted the Miami Herald’s Coach of the Year three times. Columbus has been ranked in the Top 25 in the nation 11 different times. 190 of Joe’s players have received college baseball scholarships and 27 have been drafted.

Those numbers are staggering … but it is the work behind the statistics and accolades that is even more impressive …. No one works harder than Joe Weber to maintain excellence in a program …. For 365 days a year, Joe’s life is Columbus baseball …. Camps … try-outs … fall leagues … summer teams … practices … games – hundreds a year – require a work ethic unparrelled in this county.

Joe’s success has certainly not come by luck or happenstance ….. He is a 1983 graduate of Columbus – where he was a relief pitcher for the Explorers. ….  He graduated from Auburn University before returning here as an assistant to Brother Herb for 7 seasons ….. After two years as an assistant at Braddock, Joe returned to Columbus to become its head coach.

17 years later, he’s a hall of famer ……  He’s goal is to notch 800 career wins and win 5 more state championships.
