Our state is well known for developing some of the best golfers in the world and one of the greatest in the history of high school golf in this state is a 2002 graduate of Columbus.

Over his four years at Columbus High School, James Vargas won three individual state championships.  He was the state champion as a freshman, sophomore and senior.

Over his four years, Columbus won two state team championships.  James was not only named the Top Golfer in Dade County for 4 years, he was also selected All-American.

While he was dominating at Columbus, James was also making a mark as a junior amateur.  He played in 13 United States Golf Association events including 3 United States Amateur Championships.  He also won the Doral junior title three times and the Orange Bowl invitational.

Some might remember, too, that James was invited to play in the Doral PGA event when he was in high school.

James won a scholarship to the University of Florida where he became a three-time All-American.

Today, James plays on the Hooters tour and next week begins playing in the first round of the PGA’s qualifying school.
