Jack Ellison goes into the Hall of Fame as its oldest graduate – Jack was in the school’s third graduating glass …. The Class of 1961.

If you look at early yearbooks, the name Ellison is everywhere …. There was Jack’s brother Jim and later his brother Tom … and in between there was Jack ….

He was here when the doors opened in 1958 ….  Starting here as a sophomore, Jack played three sports at Columbus ….. football, basketball and track all three years …

In the fall of 1958 …. Jack and his brother Jim led Columbus’ first football team to a 3-3-1 record ….   Jim was named first team All-City …..

As a senior, Jack guided the team to a most improbable win — a huge upset over a powerful South Dade team in Homestead.

Jack was first team all conference and all Catholic two years….

And he was honored as Columbus’ Athlete of the Year for 1961

Carter Burris – another one of our legends – tells me that Jack and his two brothers were the most feared athletes in Dade County in their day ….. Carter didn’t say it quite like this, but I got a sense that if Columbus had had a boxing team back in those days, they would have been undefeated.
