Gabriel Rodriguez (’96) – Cross Country
Gabriel Rodriguez enjoyed the most prolific cross-country career in the school’s history. The list of accomplishments complied by 1996 graduate Gabriel Rodriguez is staggering. He won every dual meet that he ran in over his four years at Columbus. He won two regional championships and three district championships.
He won the GMAC championship. He was selected first team all state three consecutive years. The same goes for first team all-County. The Miami Herald named him the Cross Country Runner of the Year in both 1994 and 1995.
Gaby Rodriguez ran track, too. He finished runner up in the state in the two-mile as a senior after helping break school records in the 4 by 800 meter relay as a sophomore and junior. He was selected first team all county in both his junior and seniors season.
It came as no surprise when Columbus named Gaby its Athlete of the Year in 1996.
Gaby received an athletic scholarship to Florida International University where he picked up in both cross country and track right where he left off at Columbus.
In cross country, he was all region and all conference. The Sun Belt conference named him to its All Decade team of the 90s. In track, he was an all-American in the steeplechase and a two-time conference champion.
After college, he competed professionally in several marathons and half marathons. Among his many triumphs, Gaby won the Fort Lauderdale marathon in 2006 and the Walt Disney half-marathon in 2002. He continues to run competitively today.
Gaby has been married for 8 years and he and his wife, Perla, have three daughters. Gaby lives in Baltimore where he works for Under Armour managing that company’s Latin American accounts.
