Eliseo “Rick” Riera-Gomez (’86) – Soccer
Rick Gomez has the honor of already being in the hall of fame at the University of North Carolina-Charlotte.
Rick was a three-year starter at Columbus and he was named all-county two years. In his junior season, the Explorers won the GMAC and district championships. In his senior year, they were runner-up in both the GMAC and district.
His play at Columbus earned Rick a scholarship to the UNC Charlotte where – amazingly – he started every game for four consecutive years. He was named all-conference and all-American both his junior and senior years.
Ricky went on to play professionally with the Miami Freedom of the American Professional Soccer League.
Rick graduated from UNC Charlotte with a degree in communications and today is a diving safety officer. He has been teaching underwater science techniques at the University of Miami for the past 15 years.
He was inducted into UNC Charlotte’s sports hall of fame in 1996.
Rick and his wife Betsy have three children. Ricky and his father, Tito Gomez, become the first father and son to enter the Columbus High Sports Hall of Fame.
